Day 4: Lets Go For It!

After yesterday’s slow moving we decided to put on our game face, wake up early, and hit the road for a looooooooong ride. Oh it was long, but not without breaks. 134 miles conquered over 16 hours. How am I still awake to even write this blog? Not quite certain but here I am.

The day started out with snowfall…of course. What else could it be? But it was a very light snow fall that didn’t last long. The first third of today’s ride was a bunch of rolling road, what I called Whoopty Whoops. Nothing was too steep or really too long. It was just a peddling kind of morning. Don’t stop those legs. So with this said we did longer increments on that area of the road just to cover some miles efficiently.

The largest break today came right before the Atigun Pass. The Atigun Pass is the highest pass in Alaska. The elevation is 4,739 feet at its highest point and we knew our legs were going to need some rest before tackling that, so that’s what we did. We actually took a quick cat nap and ate a tuna fish sandwich to reenergize.

Hours later we hit the peak of Atigun and couldn’t be more relieved to know “what goes up, must come down.”

So after seeing all that snow and very little greenery we were super stoked to see the terrain change once we made our way down in altitude. Oh and some different animals appeared! MOOSE! The moose showed up right on the roadway. Large and in charge! Never seeing a moose before I’d best describe them as horses on Steroids! You can’t imagine how large those animals are! For a few moments they made us forget about all the hard work and exhaustion we were experiencing.

So finally after a long long day of giving it our all, we saw the COLDFOOT sign! We couldn’t barely wait for a hot meal, mainly some soup, some warm indoors, WiFi, and soon to be our beds. The staff here at Coldfoot Camp have been super welcoming and we were happy to meet more travelers heading North. Tomorrow will be our day of rest and catching up with social media and family. Looking forward to it! Sweat dreams the great north!
