Ok! Lets get out of this freaking hotel! We got up early. Like 5am early and started packing up our things. One more shower please first though, because I’m not certain when the next shower will come. As I get out of the shower, William comes flying in the room and says “Pack it up quickly. Let’s go! There is or was a fire in this place!” Oh my gosh! Seriously?! I actually could smell smoke up in the room, but I didn’t give it much thought because we were leaving, and you’d think if there was a fire we’d know about it by the hotel or at least the alarm would go off. William says ” I just saw the fire truck leave.” lol. Seriously people, please don’t stay at this hotel!
So we got all of our things, it’s another beautiful morning, and started to peddle out of Whitehorse. As we started to go up the hill to get out of town, Williams pedal breaks off! He goes flying! Too bad he didn’t have a Red Bull this morning! Ha. Now what? William’s ok, a little banged up, we have more pedals, but not the clip in pedals! Grrrrr. We NEED the clip in pedals! How’s he going to climb up these roads? Well I supposed its possible, but it would be agonizing. The “pull” is much needed when climbing. Ok…we need a solution. Here we are nice and early to hit the road to avoid wind today, and we can’t even leave. Let’s pull out the phone and see when the bike shop opens. Oh wait! We never got that extra tire, so we definitely have to get to the bike shop today. Of course, it doesn’t open until 10. But what choice do we have? So let’s put it in reverse and go back down the hill toward the bike shop.
Thankfully when we got to the bike shop to see if we’d get lucky someone might be there at 7am. there was a coffee shop open attached to the building. Perfect. Let’s get some warm tea, a bake good, and get on the computers to work while we wait. While waiting a fella came and sat near us and shared with us some good tips for our road trip. He was a biker who has happened to ride the same roads we were about to ride south on. He lived in Whitehorse and knows the roads like the back of his hands. We surely appreciated the conversation with him. So thank you Mr. Biker.
The shop finally opened, and William grabbed his new pedals. They weren’t the same brand, a little different the way they fit his shoe, but still would work. Oh and we didn’t forget to grab a spare tire. Only one because that’s all they had. So William took the time and changed up his pedals and put new clips on his shoes. Now that the morning had practically passed, it’s time to try and leave Whitehorse, again.
We were going for a longer ride today when we first woke, but since the day started off with hick-ups we decided to go about 35-40 miles to a campground called Marsh Lakes Campground. My legs felt fresh and I felt like I could do another century today, but the day was passing us quickly and Williams knees were starting to hurt him do to the new pedals. So all good, a short day to prepare for a longer day of riding tomorrow.
We got to the Campground at a decent time, set up the tent, got a fire started, made a few phone calls, and got ready to prepare dinner. Our campsite was really nice. We had fresh wood under our picnic table to use for a fire, view of the lake, and a trail to the beach/water. Oh and the temperature outside was great. 65 degrees. We were loving it. So a little more rest by the fire, a roasted marshmallow or two, before we knew it, it was time for bed.
So to bed we go in such nice camping weather. Hopefully I don’t have to put my Big Agnes sleeping bag over my head tonight to keep warm. Sweet dreams Yukon.
