Day 18: Bye bye Alaska

Saying goodbye to our new friends Jim, Janice, and Atlas (malamute), was surreal. We were so thankful for their hospitality and kindness. They just took a few strangers and their pet in for a night, served them tea, a warm meals, all with no hesitation. It truly brings tears to my eyes. Finding such beautiful, spiritual hearts in this world. The love they showed us will never be forgotten.

So we peddled off waiving goodbye to our new friends and headed to the border. The weather started off quite nice. The sun was shining, and are spirits were high. The legs still felt heavy, but the border was only 22 miles away. Soooooo close. Keep those legs a moving.

We started to see weather coming our way. It was dark rain/snow clouds even. We weren’t sure exactly, but knew we didn’t want to get caught in it. We kept our eyes on it as we peddled hoping to time it right.

We came upon a rest area where you could stop and had a Welcome to Alaska sign and a Yukon sign. It was were the two merged together. They had both the American flag and Canadian flag there and a place you could put a sticker on to say you were there. Of course we stopped to take some pictures and videos.

As we tried to avoid the weather we kept seeing ahead we still ran into it. Rain. But the way the clouds were moving it didn’t last long. We were out of it in no time.

So peddle, peddle on we went. The 22 miles felt like forever, but we did make it to the border. The workers were very pleasant to us. They were excited for our travels, wished us well, and warned us of the wildlife. The bears were starting to get very active this time of year.

We crossed the border with flying colors and went to the first town Beaver Creek, where there was a convenience store and gas station. Behind the store was a small campground where we decided to stay the night. We had access to some wifi there and was able to stay in the convince store bar until they closed to do computer work in warmer conditions.

While relaxing indoors we met several people, all whom were traveling through to go into Alaska. One of the guys was starting his trip around the world and was heading up to Prudhoe Bay by Motorcycle. William and him chatted for awhile sharing stories and knowledge of what they both have already experienced in life. Another group of older people were from Ohio, near where I am from. And another family came in who also were travelers YouTubing their experiences on the road. Their channel is Deer Meat For Dinner. They have a well accomplished YouTube channel and they decided to do some filming of us while they stopped for gas. Very cool. It’s awesome when people decide to support one another rather than hate on one another. On that note, go check there Youtube channel out and don’t forget to like and subscribe to their channel (Deermeatfordinner) as well.

After all the commotion of meeting new people along the way we decided to go out to camp and cook some pasta for dinner and get ready for bed. The sun was setting and rest we needed. Tomorrow was going to be around another century ride. Or hoping so. All tucked in our sleeping bags and Aurora is settled on her bed. Time to say Goodnight. Chao.
